Step 1: This is one of the most important step of the art. Always arrive at the bus stop or station early enough to be finicky. Never ever be in a rush to board a Trotro. The delicate nature of this art form may leave you with regrets if you ignore this rule.

Step 2: Much like Kung Fu and Taekwondo, this art form demands some amount of inner peace. To enable you do this effectively, crosscheck every morsel you have to the last penny. A little  lapse in concentration may just leave you devastated and living outside your budget.

Step 3: Spot your prey. In this case I mean the bus going to the destination you intend.

Step 4: Gun them down. Stick your hand out and in a rapid up-down motion, call out the name of your destination after the bus conductor and bring him to a stop. If you fail this step, you can always redo it with different other preys that may decide to come your way.

Step 5: After successfully completing stage 4, make sure that you board the bus with whatever bag or luggage, ideally in front of you. Settle down and be comfortable because you're probably going to pay for it.

Step 6: This is perhaps the most important stage of all. If you're not asked by the bus conductor to pay your money, relax, he probably has not forgotten. But in the case that he actually does forget, do what your conscience may be able to handle. Might I remind you of the golden rule of this step.

NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER LEAVE YOUR CHANGE WITH THE BUS CONDUCTOR NO MATTER HOW SMALL IT IS BUT ALWAYS BE PREPARED TO BARGAIN YOUR WAY OUT WHEN THE PRICES SEEM TOO UNREASONABLE.

Step 7: This is the final step in the art of boarding trotro in Ghana. Make sure you give the bus conductor, enough time to stop the bus at a reasonable bus stop when you get to your destination. This means that announcing your intention early enough to serve as leverage in case the bus conductor decides to be a silly goose.

That’s the art form, pretty much summarised in 7 simple, doable steps.
